Similar to my last post about Portrait of God, I came across another YouTube horror project that’s making the jump to a full movie. This time it’s The Backrooms by Kane Parsons, and if you’ve seen any of his stuff, you already know how creepy his style is. I actually remember seeing his first Backrooms video right when it dropped, which makes this whole thing even crazier to see now.
The whole idea is super simple. It’s basically people getting stuck in this endless maze of empty rooms that feel weirdly familiar but completely off at the same time. It leans hard into atmosphere over everything, which is something I talked about a lot in my Portrait of God post too.
Now it’s getting turned into a full movie by A24, which already says a lot. It’s also got a pretty solid cast lined up, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass.
What’s honestly the coolest part is how this even happened. The original videos blew up on YouTube with over 190 million views, and now Parsons is directing the movie himself. He’s also the youngest director A24 has worked with, which is insane.
